CARs Standard 566, Appendix B: The Maintenance Task List

Appendix B to CARs Standard 566 lists sample aircraft maintenance experience tasks used to demonstrate task-level competence for AME licensing. Part 1 covers general aircraft maintenance tasks; Part 2 covers hot air balloon maintenance specifically, for the Balloon rating.

Some tasks in the list apply to every rating, while others are exclusive to one — applicants need to review the list for which items actually apply to the type of aircraft they're logging experience on. Transport Canada notes that in most instances, the list mirrors what's already contained in the TC AME Personal Logbook, so it lines up directly with how experience is expected to be recorded.

The task list is organized by ATA (Air Transport Association) chapter — a standard numbering system the aviation industry uses to categorize aircraft systems (for example, particular chapter ranges cover airframe systems, others cover powerplant, and so on). This isn't unique to Transport Canada; it's an industry-standard reference structure you'll also see in maintenance manuals and parts catalogs, so getting comfortable with it has value beyond just this specific licensing requirement. Applicants need certified experience covering not less than 70% of the items listed as applicable to the aircraft systems and structures they've worked on, within each relevant ATA chapter. This is a task-level requirement layered on top of (not instead of) the total/specialty/civil-aviation month-based experience requirement described in Appendix A — see our AME Experience Requirements guide for how the two fit together.
