Who conducts the exams and what they cover

Basic knowledge is demonstrated by examination in the subject modules of CAR-66 Appendix I, to the standard in Appendix II, and the examinations are conducted by DGCA. Each licence category needs a defined set of modules.

The Pariksha portal’s syllabus link simply points candidates to the latest CAR-66 Appendix I for modules and syllabus.

The examination standard

All basic examinations use multiple-choice questions with more than two alternatives and only one correct answer. The time allowed per module is based on a nominal average of 75 seconds per question.

The pass mark for each module and sub-module multiple-choice examination is 75%, and penalty marking is not used to decide a pass.

Retakes and attempts

A failed module may not be retaken for at least 30 days after the failed examination, and there is a maximum of three attempts at each examination in any 12-month period. The applicant has to give DGCA a written statement of the number and dates of attempts in the preceding 12 months.

The AME User Manual repeats these two rules on the examination form instructions.

How long a pass stays valid

Training courses and examinations must have been passed within 10 years before the licence application (or the addition of a category). The 10-year limit applies to each module examination, except modules already used for a licence that has been issued.

Where that is not the case, DGCA may grant full or partial examination credit; credits are granted under APM Chapter 17 and expire 10 years after they are granted.

Number of questions per module

CAR-66 Appendix II also tabulates the number of questions and the time allowed for each module and category. Modules 1 (Mathematics) and 2 (Physics) are shown as not applicable. Use the table in the official document (page 107 onwards) rather than copied lists.
